For example, if you donate stock directly to a charity, you may qualify for a deduction based on the full value of those stocks. You also may avoid paying capital-gains tax due on the sale of the securities. Please discuss this with your tax adviser. Whether you're considering a gift of stocks or cash, many firms will match employees' contributions to a qualified charity. Ask if such a match exists at your company.
