Happy Thanksgiving! It's our day to pause and recall what we have received from God. First proclaimed by George Washington, Thanksgiving was made a federal holiday by Abraham Lincoln. In 1863, during the Civil War, Lincoln's declaration gave the holiday a religious purpose:
I . . . recommend to my fellow-citizens . . . that they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land.
Today we express thanksgiving gratitude annually by sharing with family, friends and those in need. Gratitude, after all, is the beginning of true friendship, of love and mercy.
