The Year of Mercy will end in less than a month, but Pope Francis encourages us to make it a daily practice.
Dear brothers and sisters: The Lord never tires of having mercy on us, and wants to offer us his forgiveness. We all need to return to him with a new heart, purified of evil, purified by tears, to take part in his joy. Pope Francis 18 February 2015
The Mercy of Francis
Saint Francis brought mercy into the streets. Pope Francis is following in his footsteps.
Pope Francis proclaimed this Year of Mercy not as an end in itself, but rather so that we can all participate in working mercy with one another, thereby opening our hearts to wretchedness in ourselves and others. In his lifetime, Saint Francis did the same.
Mercy is a remedy for the growing violence in Chicago.
George Anderson, age 17. Christian Bandemear, age 16. Tyshawn Lee, age 9. Amari Brown, age 7.
These are just four of the over 100 names of children and young people under 20 who have died as a result of gun violence in Chicago since June 2015. But hope is not lost.
Mercy is God's love in motion, Saint Francis said. Franciscans the world over live that ideal every day.
The intersection of the themes of religious life and mercy should be even clearer for those of us who commit to living the Franciscan charism in the modern world, for mercy was a theme close to Francis of Assisi's heart.
