A 16th-Century Mystic Speaks to 21st-Century Catholics

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Teresa of Ávila. Her life had a strong influence on the Church and society in her day. But how does that affect us today?

  1. Teresa was a woman of strength. She lived as a cloistered nun, but was known for her outgoing personality, courage, warmth, and spirit as she worked to reform the Carmelite Order.
  2. She was a woman for God. She devoted much of her life to deep, contemplative prayer. Her book The Interior Castle is a classic that has inspired many to a richer prayer life.
  3. She was a woman for others. She founded monasteries, traveled extensively, wrote prayerfully, and fought for a better life for her sisters.

We struggle with busy schedules and stress. St. Teresa knew these things all too well. But her deep interior life of prayer kept her life in peaceful balance. May her example help us to stay connected to the source of our peace.

What Does St. Teresa have in common with Teresa Tomeo?

Although separated by five centuries, Teresa Tomeo draws encouragement from her namesake. St. Teresa of Ávila was an active, energetic over-achiever, deeply committed to a life of prayer—much like Tomeo.

Tomeo's new book, Beyond Me, My Selfie, and I: Finding Real Happiness in a Self-Absorbed World, takes many lessons from the life of St. Teresa. She knew how to set priorities and live an amazingly active life while remaining connected to God in contemplative prayer. In our fast-paced culture, we can learn a lot about putting God and others first.

We'd like to offer you a 30% discount on Tomeo's book today in honor of the great saint who inspires us all. Just click on the book cover and enter the discount code SELFIE on the check-out screen.
