"So it was with Saint Francis of Assisi and the leper, or with Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her poor. They understood [that] faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and suffices for the journey." Pope Francis 29 June 2013
Saint Francis: Our Model of Mercy
What can this great saint teach us?
Saint Francis knew that knowledge can be appropriated, that it can be used as a weapon. In the end, the only thing we truly own are our sins. Jesus invites us to surrender them to God's mercy.
Mercy is alive in this earthquake-ravaged country.
A year after an earthquake toppled them to the ground, the stones that once formed Sarita Majhi's simple house are stacked neatly in a pile, waiting to be used to once again build a house for the woman and her two small children.
Mother Teresa had a deep respect for Saint Francis of Assisi.
Every day after Holy Communion, Mother Teresa and her community would say the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis. The foundress of the Missionaries of Charity carried with her a small reproduction of an old painting of Francis in which the weeping saint holds a cloth to his eyes.
