Like what you see? Please click here to donate today.          Dearest Friends, The origin of our Santa Claus, St. Nicholas (270-343, A.D.), was a fourth-century bishop of Myra, a city in modern-day Turkey. There are many stories and legends told about Bishop Nicholas. Fact or fiction, the main point is that this historical figure was a friend of the poor who helped those in need. The good Bishop St. Nicholas became the model for the Santa Claus imagery we use today. In the 1950s my family celebrated the feast of St. Nicholas as many families did then, just as now. We children hung our stockings on the fireplace mantle on the eve of the saint's feast. On the morning of his feast we would check to see what St. Nick put into our stockings. The naughty ones received a piece of coal or an onion wrapped in tin foil. The good kids received candy and fruit. When I was a first grader one of my big brothers put his lump of coal into my stocking and took my candy. Of course, that injustice required parental intervention.
